Disk space free report

Hi-

what is the best way to create a Logical Disk Space Free report?

The only way I see right now is to go into the Microsoft Generic Report
library and add a new series for each server individually, and add a counter
for each object.

This is not scalable - if I had 5000 or 10000 servers it would take a week
to make the report.

Also, once I have created a report - How can I save that as a template so
that when I add servers or remove servers from the environment I can go into
the report I just spent a week creating and remove /add them without having
to re-create the report?

I see how to publish a report -but I cannot go into that and edit what is in
the report, or edit the timeframe for running the report (i.e. I want to
change it from last month to this month)

Thanks,

Hi jake.

I can't answer all your questions but I do hope Anders Bengtsson sees your
question as well since he is really into making reports.

However what I do know is when you publish your report and you run it, there
is a small button on the left topside of the report. It is the third button,
called 'Show or Hide Parameter Area'.

When you click it, you will see the parameter area. There you can adjust the
date and also target other servers/objects.

This way you can edit an existing report and publish it under another name.

Hello,

If you have published a report as a linked report, you can run it again,
and edit the parameters as Marnix said, and then publish it again and overwrite
your old report. Running performance reports a group is difficult, it will
give you a average of all the members of the group. A couple of weeks ago
I wrote a blog post about that, including a example how to run a performance
report against a group. Take a look at it and let me know if you need any
help.

Marnix, thanks for that.

Hi Jake

This was posted a while back - make sure you test in a true test
environment. Blake Mengotto was discussing it but not sure if it is his
management pack or not.

When you have "saved" a report you can always go back and choose view
parameters from the menu bar to change the parameters e.g. dates. Updates to
servers will only really work if you target and rather than individual
objects when you set the report parameters.

Cheers

Thank you for the tip on showing the details - that is very helpful.

I'm almost OK with that being how to make the reports - however, many of the
results listed from the 'Logical Disk Free MB' counter show up as scientific
notation.

so I have this nice report that shows me a graph per server, but the average
/ min / max values are scientific notation.

how can this be corrected?

Hi Jake

Yep - scientific notation as I think the size is in bytes ... which in days
of gigabyte and terrabyte drives is something of strange scale to choose.
You can change the scale - this was posted some time ago by Harold Buckner:

You have to bring the
Microsoft.SystemCenter.Datawarehouse.Report.Performance.rdl in to
visual studio for edit.
If the report gives you errors on the chart, you hve to copy a couple
dll's from the report server into your bin and add reference. I
googled the error it gives and was able to find what I need to do.
Below the chart are some table cells with Code.FormatNumber, if you
right click on it and choose expression.
You'll see somthing like....=Code.FormatNumber("G4",
Max(Fields!MaxValue.Value))
Change the "G4" to something like "G6" or "G7" this will give you 6 or
7 decimals on each side rather then 4 on each side.
Do each cell you want to change.
Save the report and import back to report server.
Good Luck

If you export the data as excel (save report as), you should be able to also
do a convert on the scientific number. Haven't tried this, but those values
are accurate, you just need to convert them.
