Discussion:
Using Groups as Reported on Objects (OpsMgr 2007 SP1)

Okay, so I waited, and now I can run reports using these groups. However,
I'm getting unexpected results. I'm getting a single graph with an average
of all the objects I added to the group instead of an individual graph for
each object.

So I'm back to square one. Let me try another question instead.

If I want to publish 4 or 5 similar reports that use different time frames
but the same set of objects, what's the best practice? As it is now, I have
to go into all 5 reports and modify the list of objects and it's very time
consuming. Later on I expect greater numbers of reports and having to change
the list of objects in each one is going to be a full time job. Maybe I'm
missing something obvious here since I don't see this type of question
raised often.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Bill
I'm having trouble running reports against a 'group' of objects in
Operations
Manager 2007 SP1 and need to understand what is going on.
My idea was to create a Group instead of listing individual objects in a
published report so that if we needed to make changes, we could make it in
one place ... the group ... instead of 4 different reports that target
different time frames, but the same objects.
When I create the groups, and explicity populate the group with members,
the
reports show no output... at least for awhile. I did one group a few weeks
back, and it now seems to be populating results. I can only assume that
there
is some delay in the groups getting pushed to the data warehouse, but can
find no information on when/how this occurs.
If I run a 'Windows Server 2003 Operating System/Performance History'
report
and explicitly ADD a number of ojbects of the type 'Windows Operating
System', the report works.
But if I create group named 'REPORT - CPU' and populate it explicity with
the same objects as above, then go to the same report and target the Group
instead of the explicity objects, the report is empty.
As I said above, I have one group I created a couple weeks ago, that now
seems to be working as expected. I'd appreciate any insight into why the
delay, if there is anyway to speed up the group population in the Data
warehouse, and any other pieces I'm missing.
Thanks!

Hello BillMc,

You can publish linked report, on the File menu when running a report there
is a publish option. Configure you reports, and then publish them. Then,
the next time you want to use them you run the linked report instead, and
it will run with your pre-configure settings.

Unfortunately, I don't see how that helps me. Maybe it's my lack of
understanding of Reporting Services.

I am publishing the reports already. The problem is this:

I create/publish 4 reports on the same set of objects with different time
frames (previous week, previous month, previous quarter, and year to date).
I then schedule them to run automatically.

3 days later management asks me to add more computers/objects to the
reports. Now I have to go in to all 4 scheduled reports and add this list of
objects to each of them.

Is there an easier way than having to modify all the scheduled reports just
to add a computer/object?

Hello BillMc,

If cant run them aginst a group of machines, so you change the group once
and affect all reports, then there is no easier way, sorry.

Well that was my idea. But when I target the group, the report comes out as
a single graph instead of individual graph for each target. Quite a pain. I
guess it's something odd about how the reports are modeled. The ones in
particular I'm seeing this with is CPU and Memory available.

Oh well.

Hello BillMc,

I reported this strange report to MSFT. If you need a new performance report
like this one, please read my blog post about athor new reports. It is not
that difficult.
